Detailed story

Shani is the son of Lord Surya and Chhaya. The cruelty in his eyes is due to the curse of his wife. According to Bramhavaivart puran, Shani Dev was a devotee of Lord Vishnu since childhood. After getting married to Kalah Priya, she wanted him to stop worshiping Lord Vishnu.

She has chastity and purity. Once she reached him with the desire to have a son, but Shani was engrossed in the meditation of Lord Vishnu. He did not notice Kalah-Priya. The wife got tired of waiting, and then she got angry and cursed him that everything seen by him will be destroyed. When Shani Dev persuaded and explained her after meditation, the wife repented of her mistake, but she did not have the power to counteract the curse. Then afterward Shani Dev has to live with his head low. Being modest, he was not willing to harm anyone.
